Technical

We are using the following:

  1. Legacy 7.5 on a personal computer for storing people files and media. Also used to produce a GEDCOM file.
  2. Bluehost.com for hosting our site.
  3. WordPress for our homepage/blog.
  4. TNG, The Next Generation Genealogy Sitebuilding, for publishing our Family History.
  5. A WordPress-TNG plugin to make them work together.

The biggest technical concern is controlling the TNG live functions, and making sure information is not lost down the road, in particular media. The reason for the problems is that import/export of GEDCOM files do not include the media itself, only the links. Since all the media files combined could reach gigabytes, the files are simply too big. Perhaps it is best explained with these 2 examples:

  1. Day 1. Trond exports a GEDCOM  file from Legacy to TNG. He uploads the associated media (photos) directly from his PC to a specified folder on bluehost.com (our web site host). Day 2: André goes online and changes his son’s baptism date. Day 3: Trond  imports a GEDCOM file from TNG to Legacy. The exact same information is stored online and at the home PC. Perfect world.
  2. Day 4. André uploads a photo of his son Victor.
